B S Yeddyurappa declares assets; cash reserves up by Rs 25 Lakhs since 2008
B S Yeddyurappa under attack from opposition
parties for alleged land scams, has declared that he did not buy land in
Bangalore after he became the chief minister in 2008. Facing a flurry of
allegations pertaining to the land and wealth he and his family members had
amassed during the two-and-a-half years he had been in power, Chief Minister
B.S. Yeddyurappa on Sunday made a determined bid to counter the charges by
making details of his assets public.
According
to the statement released to the media, Mr Yeddyurappa has no bank accounts in
Swiss banks or any other tax havens, or liabilities. He has Rs 33.43 lakh in cash; miscellaneous assets worth Rs 10.45
lakh; two cars; 2.59 kg of gold (worth Rs 5.3 lakh); 76 kg of silver (Rs 33.7
lakh); 4 agricultural properties in an extent of 18.23 acres in Shikaripura; 4
sites and two houses in Shikaripura; a house in Bengaluru; 9.12 acres of
industrial land; 320 shares; two life insurance policies worth Rs 1.7 lakh.
According to the 2008
affidavit, its value is Rs 97 lakh. The only land deal during his tenure is the
conversion of 9.12 acres agricultural land in Shiralakoppa in Shimoga's
Shikaripur taluk, into land for industrial use. This land was purchased in
January 2007. Two cars he owned when he became CM, were sold recently, fetching
him more than Rs 2.37 lakh. And he has no liabilities. The sudden declaration
of assets is the result of a fallout of a directive from BJP heads to its
ministers and opposition leaders to do so.
The Chief Minister had made this declaration of his assets
as on January 31 to BJP national president Nitin Gadkari on February 5 on the
insistence of senior leader L.K. Advani, after a series of corruption charges
were levelled against him. According to the allegations made by Opposition
leaders, Mr Yeddyurappa owned assets worth Rs 1,000 crore.
